Elsie was the first female landlord in the UK, she owned and ran The Swan in Chester Le Street. A charismatic character who broke many social norms of her time, she was hugely popular and her pub was frequented by sailors who travelled from the Newcastle docks to drink there. Though at the time her behaviour was judged as scandalous Elsie stands up to modern scrutiny very well, we feel that she would fit into todays society comfortably. An affectionate view of a strong minded woman.
